What makes a remote JD different
A remote job description needs to carry more context than an office-based one. Candidates cannot tour the office, absorb the energy of the team, or pick up on cultural cues from a physical space. The description is their primary signal about whether this is genuinely a remote role or an office role with occasional flexibility.
Be explicit about: time zone requirements or windows, async vs. sync communication culture, meeting frequency, and how the team is distributed. These details filter in the right candidates and save both parties time.
Must-have sections for remote listings
1. Role context: what the company does, why this role exists now, and who it reports to.
2. Responsibilities: a focused list of what the person will actually spend their time on. Avoid laundry lists — prioritise the top 5–7 meaningful responsibilities.
3. Requirements: separate essential qualifications (must-haves) from desirable ones (nice-to-haves). For remote roles, include communication and autonomy expectations explicitly.
4. Remote setup: time zone expectations, meeting cadence, tools used (Slack, Notion, Zoom, etc.), equipment policy or home office stipend.
5. Compensation: always include a range. It is expected in remote hiring and significantly improves application quality.
6. Hiring process: how many stages, what each involves, approximate timeline.
Common mistakes to avoid
Vague time zone language: "flexible" or "work from anywhere" without elaboration is now a yellow flag for experienced remote candidates. State your actual requirements.
Listing every possible tool: mentioning 15 platforms signals a scattered tech stack. List the 3–4 tools central to the role.
Copying an office JD: if the description does not mention remote work, async culture, or distributed team context at all, it sends a signal that remote has been added as an afterthought.
