Boolean Search

A structured search technique using operators like AND, OR, and NOT to refine candidate searches on platforms like LinkedIn or job boards.

Boolean search is a logic-based approach to searching databases and platforms for candidates. By combining keywords with Boolean operators — AND (both terms must appear), OR (either term may appear), NOT (exclude a term), and parentheses for grouping — recruiters can build highly targeted searches that surface the most relevant profiles.

For example, a recruiter looking for a frontend engineer comfortable with React or Vue might search: `("frontend" OR "front-end") AND ("React" OR "Vue") NOT "junior"`. This narrows thousands of profiles down to the most qualified matches in seconds.

Boolean search is most commonly used on LinkedIn Recruiter, but the same principles apply to Google X-Ray searches, Boolean searches on GitHub, and many ATS platforms. Mastering Boolean search significantly reduces sourcing time and improves the quality of candidate pipelines.
