Freelance

A form of self-employment where a person provides services to multiple clients on a project or contract basis, without being a permanent employee of any single organisation.

Freelancers are independent workers who offer their skills — writing, design, development, consulting, photography, and more — to clients under short- or medium-term contracts. Unlike employees, freelancers manage their own schedule, set their own rates, handle their own taxes, and typically work for multiple clients simultaneously.

For companies, engaging freelancers provides access to specialised skills on demand without the commitment of a full-time hire. For the individuals themselves, freelancing offers flexibility, variety, and — for those in high-demand disciplines — the potential for higher earnings than salaried equivalents.

The gig economy has made freelancing more accessible through platforms like Upwork, Toptal, and Fiverr. However, the legal classification of freelancers vs employees is increasingly under scrutiny globally, with several jurisdictions tightening rules to prevent exploitation through misclassification.
