At-Will Employment
An employment arrangement where either the employer or the employee can end the working relationship at any time, for any legal reason, without advance notice.
At-will employment is the dominant employment model in the United States. Under this arrangement, an employer may terminate an employee for any reason — or no reason at all — as long as the reason is not illegal (for example, discrimination based on race, gender, or religion). Equally, the employee may resign at any time without obligation.
At-will employment is distinct from employment contracts that specify a fixed term or that require "cause" for termination. In practice, most employers still follow internal processes and provide notice out of professional courtesy, even when not legally required to do so.
Outside the US, most countries have stronger employee protections through statutory notice periods, redundancy pay requirements, and unfair dismissal laws. Remote companies hiring internationally must understand the local employment laws in each jurisdiction where they have workers.
