Unlimited PTO

A leave policy in which employees are not given a fixed number of paid vacation days and are instead trusted to take time off as needed, with manager approval.

Unlimited PTO (Paid Time Off) is a policy under which employees are not given a set number of vacation days — they are instead free to take paid time off when they need it, provided their work is on track and they have manager agreement. It is intended to signal trust, reduce the administrative overhead of tracking days, and attract employees who value flexibility.

In practice, unlimited PTO has a counterintuitive outcome: employees on unlimited PTO policies often take fewer days than those with a defined allowance. Without an explicit entitlement, many workers feel uncertain about what is "acceptable" and err on the side of taking less time. Organisations that want unlimited PTO to function well typically encourage managers to actively model taking leave and set a recommended minimum.

For remote teams, where the boundaries between work and personal life are more permeable, a meaningful PTO policy — whether unlimited or capped — is especially important for preventing burnout and sustaining long-term performance. A policy is only as good as the culture that surrounds it.
