Inclusive Hiring
A recruitment approach designed to attract, assess, and select candidates from diverse backgrounds fairly, removing systemic barriers from the hiring process.
Inclusive hiring involves designing every stage of the recruitment process — from job description language to interview panels to assessment criteria — to ensure that it does not systematically disadvantage candidates from any particular group. This includes addressing unconscious bias, using structured interviews, and considering candidates' individual needs.
Practical inclusive hiring practices include: using gender-neutral, jargon-free job descriptions; removing identifying information from CVs during initial screening; ensuring diverse interview panels; standardising interview questions across candidates; and using skills-based assessments that measure relevant abilities rather than proxies like educational pedigree.
Remote-first companies have an inherent advantage in inclusive hiring: they can recruit from anywhere, which opens the talent pool to candidates who might be excluded from local labour markets due to disability, caregiving responsibilities, or geography. However, remote hiring still requires deliberate inclusive practices to avoid replicating offline biases in online processes.
